BRUCE HASSON

Painter and Sculptor

Bruce Hasson is a San Francisco Bay Area painter and sculptor whose work explores themes of nature, climate change, and the global arms race. His recent work examines the relationship between animals and the human figure, emphasizing the vulnerabilities they share and the uncertain futures they face. Through these compelling images, he draws attention to the precarious condition of wildlife and the environmental challenges confronting our world.

Hasson’s large-scale bronze sculptures and paintings are held in public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. His monumental Peace Bell sculpture, Millennia, cast from melted firearms, was exhibited in Rome’s Campidoglio in 2000, where it was struck by Mikhail Gorbachev and Rome’s Mayor, Francesco Rutelli, during a Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. The sculpture was later exhibited in front of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi and in the piazza of the city’s art museum.

In addition to sculpture and painting, Hasson has developed a distinctive body of work in paper mosaics—cut paper assembled on canvas—a medium that draws together elements of painting and printmaking while emphasizing his textures and forms within the imagery. Through the arrangement of paper fragments, these works create a visual landscape that is uniquely their own.
